  • Description

The B-17, nicknamed the Flying Fortress, is one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II,designed by Boeing and widely used by the United States in the European theater. However,it also played a significant role in the Pacific War.

Background of the B-17 in the Pacific War

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States Air Force (USAAF) already had a few B-17s deployed in the Pacific, primarily in the Philippines and Hawaii. Although these heavy bombers were initially intended for long-range reconnaissance and patrol missions, they were soon used in bombing missions against Japanese targets.
