The Barrett M82A2 was an experimental bullpup version of the famous Barrett M82 designed by Ronnie Barrett and produced by Barrett Firearms Manufacturing in the late 1980s. Unlike the standard M82, the M82A2 was configured in a bullpup layout and intended to be fired from the shoulder in an anti-helicopter role, allowing a single soldier to aim the powerful .50 BMG rifle upward at low-flying aircraft. The design placed the action and magazine behind the trigger, included a shoulder rest, forward grip, and specialized sighting system to help control recoil while standing. Despite its innovative concept, the weapon proved difficult to use effectively due to its weight, recoil, and the limited practicality of engaging aircraft with a shoulder-fired .50-caliber rifle. As a result, the M82A2 saw only limited production and was eventually discontinued, making surviving examples relatively rare and notable curiosities in the evolution of large-caliber rifles.
