The Bergmann MP18 was a German submachine gun developed during World War I and is widely considered the first practical submachine gun used in combat. Designed by Hugo Schmeisser and manufactured by Bergmann Waffenfabrik, it was introduced in 1918 to equip German stormtrooper units engaged in trench warfare. Chambered for the 9×19 mm Parabellum cartridge, the MP18 used a simple blowback system and typically fed from a 32‑round “snail” drum magazine originally designed for the Luger pistol. Its compact size and fully automatic fire gave soldiers much greater close‑range firepower than pistols or bolt‑action rifles, making it particularly effective in confined battlefield environments such as trenches. Although it appeared late in the war and was produced in relatively small numbers, the MP18 had a major influence on later firearms design and helped establish the submachine gun as an important class of military weapon throughout the 20th century
