This vehicle was Boeing's proposal for the NASA Exploration Command Module (ECM). ECM would serve multiple roles in future human spaceflight programs: Firstly as an expansion module for the lunar orbital Gateway space station, and later as the main transfer habitat module for crewed Mars missions. Boeing's proposal, while small compared to the ECM reference design, meets the requirements for a minimalist Mars flyby or orbital mission, and featured in a Boeing concept for such missions beginning in 2033.
Unlike most other ECM proposals, Boeing's was based on a rigid metallic pressure vessel of ISS heritage. It features built-in solar arrays and radiators, mounting locations for external payloads, and its own propulsion module (sized only for small course correction maneuvers and docking, with larger burns performed either by Orion or a separate Cryogenic Propulsion Stage). For the 2033 Mars flyby mission, the combined vehicle stack would include an ECM, Orion MPCV, and cryogenic Earth Departure Stage. Because this trajectory would require a close pass near the Sun (approaching the orbit of Venus), an additional deployable sunshade is also included, to simplify thermal control on Orion (Orion spacecraft not included in this file)
