The Bolshoi Theatre is located in the Russian capital city of Moscow. It is Russia’s most well-known theatre for opera and ballet. The present theatre was constructed between 1776 and 1780 by Prince Peter Urussow.
The building stands on wooden stakes in previously marsh-like ground in the centre of Moscow. In 1805 the theatre burned down and was reconstructed according to a design by the architect Joseph Bove. The Bolshoi has been undergoing radical renovation since 2005 and it is anticipated that it will be closed until 2011.
