An axle is a rod at the ends of which wheels are placed. Axles are rotating and fixed (relative to the wheel). Unlike a shaft, an axle is not designed to transmit torque.

On wheeled vehicles, the axle may be attached to the wheels, rotating with them, or attached to the vehicle, while the wheels can rotate around the axle. In the first case, bearings or bushings are installed at the attachment points where the axle is supported. In the latter case, the bearing or bushing is inside the center hole in the wheel to allow the wheel or gear to rotate around the axle.
