Description

This fortification was built in the seventeenth century to protect and give shelter the entrance to the bar of Maracaibo, a major and strategic cities in the region by offering easy access to the cities of the Andes. During this period, attacks and raids by pirates and corsairs were very frequent reason why the major cities had their defense mechanisms. Note that this place was where the dictator Juan Vicente Gomez housed together all those opposed to his government. This historic site, which is a jewel of colonial military architecture, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. Currently recovered and offers visitors the information necessary to know the interesting facts that were lived there.
