Christchurch, a former Anglican colony, is on the east coast of 's South Island. You can take a flat-bottomed boat ride along the River Avon, which runs through the city centre. Bicycle paths run along the banks of the river. The vast Hagley Park and botanical gardens are nearby. As a result of the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, many stone buildings were destroyed in the historical center of the city.
