Daugavpils is a city of national importance in Latvia, the second largest and most important city in the country after Riga. The southernmost of all the cities in the republic, it is located on the Daugava River, near the border with Lithuania and Belarus. The city was founded in 1275 as the fortress of Dinaburg.
