Frankfurt am Main (or simply Frankfurt) is a city in central Germany on the banks of the Main River, a major financial center where the European Central Bank and the Federal Bank of Germany are located. The famous writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born here, and a museum is now opened in his house. Most of the city's buildings were damaged during World War II and reconstructed in the post-war years. In the Altstadt (Old Town) lies the Römerberg Square, where the Christmas market opens every year.
