Ghent is a city in northwestern Belgium, located at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. It was a prosperous city-state in the Middle Ages. Today, Ghent is considered a university and cultural center. The city is known for its medieval architecture: the 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei embankment with its ancient buildings.
