Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province in East China, lying about 300 kilometers from Shanghai upstream of the Yangtze River. During the Ming Dynasty, the city was the capital. This period is reminiscent of numerous architectural monuments, including the Zhonghua Gate (Gate of China). They are a fragment of a huge fortress wall of the XIV century and once served as the southern entrance to the old city.
