Nice is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera, lying on the pebble shores of the Bay of Angels. Founded by the ancient Greeks, in the 19th century the city became a seaside resort popular among the European aristocracy. Many artists have linked their fate with Nice. The Matisse Museum houses one of the largest collections of paintings by the master, who lived in Nice for about 40 years.
