Rouen is the capital of the French region of Normandy. This port city on the Seine River played an important role both in the era of the Roman Empire and in the Middle Ages. Its glorious past is reminiscent of the city's cobbled pedestrian streets, medieval half-timbered houses and Gothic churches such as Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen. The spiers of Notre Dame Cathedral rise above the city. This building was especially loved and often depicted in his paintings by the French impressionist Claude Monet.
