Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia in the center of the Balkan Peninsula. At different periods of its history, the city was under Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule. A 15th-century stone bridge connects the Ottoman bazaar Stara Čaršija on the northern bank of the Vardar River with the modern Macedonia Square in the south. The Skopje Fortress (or Kale Fortress), built by the river, has protected the city for centuries.
