Stamford is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population of the city is 128.3 thousand people (2014), which makes Stamford the fourth largest city in the state.

Stamford was called the Rippowam by the Indians living in the region; it was also called by the first European settlers. The name was later changed to Stamford after the town of the same name in Lincolnshire, England. The corresponding document was signed on July 1, 1640 by Captain Turner of the New Haven Colony and the Indian chief Ponus.
