Trieste is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. The port city occupies a narrow strip of land between the Adriatic Sea and the border with Slovenia on the limestone plateau of Kras. The appearance of the city was clearly influenced by Italy, Austria-Hungary and Slovenia. There is both a medieval old town and an Austrian quarter in the neoclassical style.
