The Consolidated Gas Building is a 515ft (157m) tall skyscraper in New York City. Other names include the Consolidated Edison Building and its street address, 4 Irving Place. The massive neoclassical building was designed by Warren and Wetmore and Henry Hardenbergh and completed in 1929. It was completed in multiple stages from 1914 to 1929 to accommodate the Consolidated Gas Company's growing demand for office space. With all its expansions, the building towers prominently in the skyline over Union Square, a section of Manhattan that otherwise has few skyscrapers. The tower portion's clock and spire light up at night in various colors. While its unusual placement for such a grand structure makes it largely overlooked, it nonetheless holds a position among the city's most beautiful buildings.
