The Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is a vast, otherworldly volcanic landscape located on the Snake River Plain in Idaho.Today, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve encompasses over 1,100 square miles and is jointly managed by the National Park Service (NPS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It offers visitors opportunities for hiking, camping (at the Lava Flow Campground), caving (a free permit is required), and exploring the 7-mile scenic Loop Road. The Monument is a popular destination for its unique geology, and has even served as a training ground for NASA astronauts preparing for lunar missions. While the volcanic activity is currently dormant, the region is considered a potentially active volcanic area.
