Scientific name Karpin - Latin for hornbeam, betulus means birch, because the tree looks like a birch. Common name Hornbeam refers to dense horny wood and to the use of wood for the manufacture of beams, bulls, parquet, as well as other pieces of furniture. Another name is common hornbeam.
