The Fokker 60 was a design improvement over the predecessor the F-27-50 and Fokker Mk-50. Aerodynamic improvements and more payload capacity were just two of the improvements in this stretched version of the Fokker 50. It was designed in the mid 1980s to meet a need for a larger short range commuter in Europe.

The aircraft was in production until Fokker was liquidated in the late 1990s. Over 150 were built. Dozens are still in service around the world. It was powered by 2 Pratt and Whitney 2500 hp turbo-props designed to be more efficient and driving Dowty Rotol 6-blade props.
