Description

In traditional belief, the soothing sound of a metal gong, when struck gently, is thought to have healing powers. Iron and bronze gongs serve different functions due to their unique qualities. Ivory objects, restricted to the royal family, hold significant value for their purity and difficulty of acquisition. Early ivory double bells, adorned with power-engendering images, are used in rituals by the Oba of Benin to dismiss unruly spirits. These bells, tapped rhythmically during ceremonies, symbolize the Oba’s authority and are believed to ward off negative energies.
