Hippopotamus is a genus of artiodactyl mammals of the Hippopotamidae family that only has one current species, the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), which lives in Africa.

Hippopotamids are large mammals with short, stubby legs and barrel-shaped bodies. They have a large head, with a wide mouth and nostrils located high on the snout. Like pigs, they have four toes, but unlike pigs, they use all of their toes to walk. Hippopotamids are ungulates, but unlike most ungulates they do not have hooves and instead have pads of tough connective tissue.
