A bronze hornblower figure, created using the lost-wax casting method, depicts a person playing a side-blown horn. Adorned with hair braids, a domed cap featuring a feather, a leopard’s tooth collar, coral bead necklaces, multiple bracelets, a sleeveless surcoat, and a patterned wrap-around skirt, the figure represents a member of the retinue of the Oba (king) of Benin. This artifact, likely placed on altars within the Benin royal court during the late sixteenth to early seventeenth century, honors the Oba’s ancestors. The horn, traditionally made of ivory, served as a symbol of royal authority and was used to announce the Oba’s presence during important ceremonies.
