Jōjok lanterns are lanterns that were used to light the way when traveling at night or when the Sunrae soldiers patrolled the nighttime landscape. A type of portable lantern, the jojok lantern was mainly used during the Joseon Dynasty, and the Sunrae soldiers used to patrol the streets at night to guard against thieves and fires. It was also called a 'gourd lantern' because it was shaped like a gourd, and it was also called a 'bandit lantern' because the Sunrae soldiers used it to catch bandits. You can think of it as a modern-day flashlight. The skeleton of a jojok lantern is made of iron or wood, and a thick layer of oil paint is applied to the outside, and a gilshangmun, eight-legged gate, bat gate, etc. are painted on it. Inside, the iron candle holder could be rotated so that the candle always remained horizontal even if the back was moved up, down, left and right.
