Jōjok lanterns are lanterns that were used to light the way when traveling at night or when the Sunrae soldiers patrolled the nighttime landscape. A type of portable lantern, the jojok lantern was mainly used during the Joseon Dynasty, and the Sunrae soldiers used to patrol the streets at night to guard against thieves and fires. It was also called a 'gourd lantern' because it was shaped like a gourd, and it was also called a 'bandit lantern' because the Sunrae soldiers used it to catch bandits.
