The Kulsprutegevär m/40 was a Swedish medium machine gun adopted during the early years of World War II, based on the American Browning M1919 design. Chambered in the 6.5×55mm Swedish cartridge, it was adapted to meet Sweden’s defensive needs at a time when the country sought to strengthen its military neutrality. The weapon was primarily used in a sustained fire role, mounted on tripods or vehicles, and was valued for its reliability and relatively straightforward operation. However, like many early wartime adaptations, it faced some technical challenges, particularly related to ammunition compatibility and performance under prolonged firing conditions. Despite these issues, the Kulsprutegevär m/40 played an important role in Sweden’s wartime preparedness and represents a notable example of how existing weapon designs were modified to suit national requirements.
