The Istinggar is a traditional matchlock firearm from the Malay Archipelago. It appeared in the region during the 16th century, after firearms technology spread through trade and conflict with foreign powers such as the Portuguese following the Capture of Malacca (1511).

The weapon was widely used by Malay sultanates including the Johor Sultanate and the Aceh Sultanate. It served primarily in warfare and naval battles, where soldiers fired it from ships, fortifications, or on land during conflicts with European and regional rivals.

The istinggar used a matchlock ignition system, where a slow-burning cord ignited gunpowder to fire a lead ball. It remained in use in the region from the 1500s to the 1700s, before gradually being replaced by more advanced firearms such as flintlock muskets.
