This project is a 3d modeling recreation of Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library in Florence, an architectural masterpiece from the 1500s. The volume in question is that large vestibule at the entrance of the library, with the iconic stairs curling towards it.
One of the most remarkable subjects of wonder from architecture students such as I was a few years back is now made readable in a digital version, in any section, axonometric view, perspective shot you can think of.The model is made with extremely close accuracy, in this real world scale version. Around +95% accurate, based on the most pecise drawings I could find and also tons of visual reference pictures taken from inside this famous vestibule.
There is one version of the scene with the round volutes (which I finally managed to make) and columns and another one with more squared geometry.The base 2D files (dwg and jpg) as well as exported ones from sketchup are available, as can be seen in the preview images.
Native format
- The 2D references plan and sections were drawn in Autocad (the base file is in the package).
- Transformed in 3D in Sketchup entirely, using a lot of different layers and components (thank you symmetry and repetition).
- Final renders are from the 3dsmax version with vray 5.
- Override materials are 3D print plastic, concrete and wireframe, tests on different scene materials can be made.
The vestibule has been designed as a giant box that can be opened or closed on the wall facing the stairs, revolving around the corners. No details on the outside facades at this point.
