Makalu is the fifth highest eight-thousander in the world. It is located in the eastern part of the Mahalangur Himalayas, in the central Himalayas, on the border of Nepal with China, 22 km southeast of Everest. Makalu is one of the most difficult eight-thousanders to climb, with less than 30% of expeditions succeeding.
