Owls belong to the order Strigiformes, encompassing more than 200 species of predominantly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey. They are characterized by their upright stance, large and broad head, binocular vision, binaural hearing, sharp talons, and feathers adapted for silent flight. Notable exceptions to their solitary nature are the diurnal northern hawk-owl and the sociable burrowing owl.

Owls are categorized into two families: the true owl family, Strigidae, and the barn-owl family, Tytonidae.
