  • Description

Paraceratherium was a gigantic, hornless rhinoceros that lived during the Oligocene epoch, around 34 to 23 million years ago. It is considered one of the largest land mammals to have ever existed, standing over 5 meters (16 feet) tall at the shoulder and weighing an estimated 15 to 20 metric tons. With a long neck and a head adapted for browsing, Paraceratherium likely fed on leaves from tall trees, much like modern giraffes. Despite its enormous size, it was a herbivore, and its fossils have been found across Asia, including regions of modern-day China, Mongolia, and Pakistan. Paraceratherium is a key figure in understanding the evolution of large mammals after the age of the dinosaurs.
