- The Populus balsamifera, commonly known as the balsam poplar, is a hardy, deciduous tree that grows in North America along the northern limit of trees. The tree has a fast growth rate and can reach up to 200 years of age . The balsam poplar prefers to grow on upland and flood plain sites, with its best development on flood plains . The tree's native range stretches from Newfoundland to northwest Alaska and part of southcentral Alaska, south to northeast Ohio and east to Massachusetts, and local in the western mountains . It is a short-lived tree and stands grow primarily on soils of Inceptisols order and, to a lesser extent, of Entisols order . The light seeds have a silky hair aiding in dispersal, and the tree is capable of flowering at ten years . The balsam poplar is often found in the boreal forest, where it dominates along with coniferous trees
