Description

Structure: arch bridge, suspended structure of the board. Location: On the Guadiana River in Merida, Extremadura (Spain). Built from 1988 to 1991. Designer (s): Santiago Calatrava. Materials: steel, prestressed concrete. Dimensions: Head Light 189 m. Total length 465 m. 32 m deep bow. The deterioration in the traffic subjected to the Roman Bridge took replaced by a new bridge. The project of Calatrava dialogue with the Roman bridge with a figure of contrast, where the great single arch stands on the sky and its archetypal monumental profile. The challenge posed by the Roman structure, 2000 years old, is borne by the rhythmic repetition of supporting elements. The visual overlay of both is impressive, the Roman Bridge acting as base, massive, rhythmic, dominated by the great arch proposed by Calatrava. Pedestrians cross the bridge by a 500 m long walkway, located at a height of one meter and a half on the road traffic.
