Description

The Puerta de Palmas, is framed by two crenellated towers circular. These towers are tight for decorative cords characteristic early sixteenth century, and its walls are covered with plaster simulating brick blocks. At the height of the terraces of the towers it has acroteria. The Puerta de Palmas has a very different look in its two facades. The exterior, double arch. On the key of the lower arch the arms of Charles V and the spandrels of the upper two medallions with busts, one male and one female, historical and allegorical figures identified by different authors: Charles V, Philip II, fame, Queen Juana ... At the ends of the arc shields crowned lion rampant that probably correspond to those of the city. Tops this facade a cornice and frieze with a Latin inscription made in 1551, with Prince Felipe and Emperor Charles V, probably during a restoration or remodeling of the door. The lower surface of the upper arch is acasetonado. The Puerta de Palma was state jail in the early nineteenth century.
