Modelled a row house, a typical citizen's house in an Edo town during the Edo era (16-18C) in Japan.

The row houses were divided into the slightly more upmarket 'omote-dana' with tiled roofs and the 'ura-nagaya' in the narrow alleyways, with the cheaper and smaller ura-nagaya being the typical dwellings of the common people.

In the city of Edo, where fires were very common, the Ura-nagaya were so inexpensive that they were said to pay for themselves in three years, and each room had no windows.

The tenements were also separated by gates, which were closed at night for security. The modelling was done for one section separated by such a gate.

The last three images depict the actual living quarters of such tenements.
