The Shawaz IED typically consists of a metal casing filled with High-Explosive (HE) material and is engineered to focus the explosive energy in a specific direction. The SC design utilises a conical or hemispherical metal liner, often made from copper or another ductile metal. When the device is detonated, the explosive force collapses the liner into an Explosively-Formed-Jet (EFP) capable of penetrating armour.

In the off-route configuration, the Shawaz is positioned beside a road or path commonly used by armoured vehicles. It is triggered remotely or by a Command-Wire-IED (CWIED) as the target passes, directing the EFJ towards the vehicle’s vulnerable side or underbelly.

Alternatively, the Shawaz device can be attached directly to a vehicle, utilising an integral Delay (DLY) fuze, often during close-contact attacks or by exploiting vulnerabilities in stationary vehicles. This method maximises the effectiveness of the SC against the vehicle’s armour.
