The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-sized military utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. Sikorsky submitted a design proposal in 1972 to participate in the U.S. Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition. The Army designated this prototype as the YUH-60A. After a competitive fly-off against the Boeing Vertol YUH-61 in 1976, the Black Hawk was selected as the winning design.

Named after the Native American war leader Black Hawk, the UH-60A entered service with the U.S. Army in 1979, replacing the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the Army’s primary tactical transport helicopter. Subsequently, electronic warfare and special operations variants of the Black Hawk have been developed and deployed. Moreover, multi-purpose improved variants such as the UH-60L and UH-60M have also been developed.

Major variants include the SH-60 Seahawk helicopter for the U.S. Navy, the HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter for the U.S. Air Force, the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter for the U.S. Coast Guard, and the civilian variant known as the S-70. In addition to use by the U.S. armed forces, UH-60 helicopters have been exported to numerous countries, with licensed production under contract in Japan, designated the Mitsubishi H-60.
