The Smith Tower is a 462ft (141m) tall skyscraper in Seattle, Washington. Designed by architects Gaggin & Gaggin and completed in 1914, the building was the first major skyscraper to be built on America's West Coast. It remained the tallest building in Seattle for almost 50 years until the construction of the Space Needle in 1962. Designed primarily in the neoclassical style, the building features a contrasting mix of a richly ornamented terra cotta facade and extra-wide Chicago School style windows along its entire height. Atop an elaborate set of gigantic cornices rests a comparatively austere pyramid roof. Together, the Smith Tower may be a bit quirky but nonetheless iconic.
