Darth Bane was the Dark Lord of the Sith who created the Rule of Two . The Order 's last survivor of its destruction by the Jedi a thousand years before the Clone Wars , he found that it was internal strife among the affiliates that had weakened them. So he refounded it by decreeing that there could only be two Sith at the same time , a master and an apprentice . This new order of the Sith would later hatch a secret plot to destroy the Jedi. Bane was eventually defeated by his natural enemies, who ever since mistakenly believed they had eliminated the Sith for good. Bane's revenge on the Jedi came a millennium later, when Darth Sidious unleashed the Clone Wars and reorganized the Republic into the Galactic Empire , ordering the extermination of the Jedi. The victory, however, did not last long: just over two decades later, Sidious' apprentice Darth Vader redeemed himself as the Jedi Knight he once was, and killed his master at the cost of his own life, ending to the Sith once and for all.
