A supermarket is a self-service shop offering a wide variety of food, beverages and household products, organized into sections. In everyday American English usage, however, grocery store is often casually used as a synonym for supermarket.The supermarket retail format first appeared around 1930 in the United States as the culmination of almost two decades of retail innovations, and began to spread to other countries after extensive worldwide publicity in 1956.
