Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia, an archipelago in the South Pacific. Its western part of Tahiti Nui and the much smaller eastern part of Tahiti Iti are connected by a narrow isthmus. Black sand beaches, lagoons, waterfalls and extinct volcanoes attract many travelers. In the 18th century, Tahiti was explored by James Cook and then glorified by the French artist Paul Gauguin.
