The Taigei-class submarine is a modern class of diesel-electric attack submarines operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is one of the latest generations of submarines developed by Japan to enhance its maritime defense capabilities.
The first submarine of this class, JS Taigei, was commissioned in 2022. The name “Taigei” means “Big Whale” in Japanese.
Key features of the Taigei-class submarine include:
Advanced lithium-ion batteries, which provide longer underwater endurance and faster recharging compared to older battery systemsStealth technology, making the submarine quieter and harder to detect by enemy sonarModern sonar and combat systems for improved detection and targeting of threatsTorpedoes and anti-ship missiles as its primary weapons
The Taigei-class is designed mainly for:
Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)Anti-surface warfare (ASuW)Surveillance and intelligence gathering
Compared to its predecessor (the Sōryū-class), the Taigei-class has improved crew comfort, automation systems, and operational efficiency, making it more effective for long missions under the sea.
