After the reduction of Groningen in 1594 arose soon plans to expand the city significantly. The first plans date back to 1608, but only in 1625 new fortifications were finished. The new interpretation also had to get a new church. With its construction started in 1660 following the example of the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam. The New Church is the first church in Groningen which was built for Protestant worship (the Martini Church and the Aa-church were originally Catholic churches).
