This creature is the third prototype of a private project I called Limited Edition (in reference to the art gallery founded by Mr. Elijah Price in the 2000 film Unbreakable): a set of exclusive monsters and creatures, made available for download by artists and collectors on the CGtrader platform. As a starting point, I selected The Thing (2011) as the first film to revisit, due to my affection for the production and my veneration for the 1982 classic of the same name.
The creature called 'Splitface' is one of the few forms of 'The Thing' that is present in both films: the classic (from 1982) and its prequel (from 2011). In John Carpenter's cult movie, The Splitface was created and designed by Grand Master Rob Bottin; and, in the prequel, by Masters Gills, Woodruff Jr., Paul Komoda and the team at ADI Studios. In the prequel, Splitface was reinterpreted and renamed 'Edvard-Adam Thing' (a reference to the characters that It assimilated and merged into a single being). Edvard Adam Thing went through several concepts - from sketches, 1:10 models, to the 1:1 live-action model and its CGI version, which generated many dissonances between the versions themselves, and with the one seen in the classic.Precisely because of this, this creature has had several interpretations and reinterpretations by various 3D artists (including some very interesting ones here at CGtrader). Thus, I opted to recreate the second 1:10 scale model with the main characteristics of the 1:1 scale model - including the faces of the two actors (based on the making-of material from ADI studios). In addition to traditional modeling, I also used AI simulations in order to obtain the maximum possible fidelity in some parts and pieces of the prototype.
The final result was very well balanced and impressive. The custom base, part of one of the film posters.
