The 1:48 scaled 3D Printed Flower Class Corvette that was released on CGTrader in May 2019 has spawned many requests for a Castle Class Corvette. The Castle Class Corvettes started appearing in 1943 and were an updated version of the much more numerous Flower Class Corvettes. The hulls were 50 feet longer with a square stern. The Castles had a different superstructure with a lattice type mast and more closely resembled frigates versus the “converted whale catcher” look of the Flowers.
Line drawings of the HMS Hadleigh and Hedingham Castle were used to design the hull. Deck details came from the movie “The Cruel Sea” that featured the HMS Saltash Castle and photos found on the on internet. Hull details include a rudder post, 8mm propeller bore, hull plate weld lines, scuppers, bilge strakes, port holes and anchor passageways. Hull access is provided through removable superstructure, mid/rear engine cabins and rear depth charge racks.Scale details include: main 4 inch gun, Squid ASW, 20mm Oerlikons, 30mm Bofors depth charge racks, launchers, whale boats, life rafts, hatches and doors.
Motor mounts for a 550 or 750 type Mabuchi brushed motor and a servo mount over the rudder post for a standard servo are included.
The model dimensions are: 1606.8 mm x 241.2mm x 650.2 mm and Cura v 4.8 was the slicer.
The prototype was printed on a 3d printer with 310 x 310 x 340mm build volume.Some sections have been chopped up to accomodate a 3d printer with a 220x220x250mm build volume.
