  • Description

Deinocheirus was a bizarre and unique dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago. It belonged to the theropod group but was unlike typical carnivorous theropods. Instead, Deinocheirus was an omnivore, with a combination of traits that included a large, bulky body, a long, toothless beak, and massive arms tipped with sharp claws, each claw over 20 cm (8 inches) long. Reaching lengths of up to 11 meters (36 feet) and weighing as much as 6 tons, it had a hump-like structure on its back formed by elongated neural spines. Fossils, primarily discovered in Mongolia, show that Deinocheirus likely fed on a mix of plants, fish, and other small organisms, making it a significant part of its ecosystem. Its name, meaning terrible hand, reflects the initial discovery of its enormous arms.
