The Gum Nebula (Gum 12) is a bright, large planetary nebula located 1000 light years from Earth in the constellation Vela and Puppis. in the southern constellation of Vela and Puppis. With an apparent magnitude of +12 and an apparent size of 1470 ly, the nebula is visible in binoculars and easily observed in small telescopes in good conditions. Its striking appearance has earned it the nickname the Smoke Nebula.
