The Northrop F-5-G Tiger began a development program which led to the F-20-A Tigershark. It was equipped with a larger single engine and greatly improved performance over the earlier F-5 Tigers.
The Northrop F-20 was initially a development by private investors to sell an advanced lightweight fighter to overseas allies without risking the advanced avionics of the more advanced F-15 and F-16 fighters falling into the Soviet hands. The project was cancelled in 1986 after only some success. Some were sold to the US Air Force and others to National Guard units.
