  • Description

Almaz was a programme of Soviet crewed military reconnaissence space stations, resulting in the OPS Orbital Piloted Station (Russian: Орбитальная Пилотируемая Станция). Three instances of the Almaz space station flew:

  • OPS-1 flew as Salyut-2 in 1973, but depressurised two weeks after launch and was never vistied by a crew.

  • OPS-2 flew as Salyut-3 in 1974 and was visited by Soyuz-14 for a 15 day mission. A second mission to the station failed.

  • OPS-3 flew as Salyut-5 in 1976. (Salyut-4 was a 'civilian' DOS station of a different design). Salyut-5 was visited by two crews in Soyuz-21 and Soyuz-24.

This model represents all three flown OPS stations. All textures are packed in the .blend file. Textures have been included with Salyut-2, -3 and -5 markings as separate materials. Simply select one of the following materials for the white paint slot on the main mesh:

  • white-paint.salyut2

  • white-paint.salyut3

  • white-paint.salyut5

The Avora antenna has been included as a separate mesh in its own collection. This is because my understanding is it only flew with Salyut-5, not -2 or -3. However, details are hard to come by, so this may be wrong. Similarly, I have included the infamous R-23M self-defence 'space cannon' as part of the main mesh. This cannon was test fired on Salyut-3 and I assume was also present on Salyut-2 and -5, so it is modelled in the main mesh. The cannon was aimed by pointing the whole station, and was due to be replaced with a missile system in the next Almaz model (OPS-4), but this was never flown and so has not been modelled.

The solar arrays are not rigged to deploy/retract, but can be rotated.

Other file formats (FBX, OBJ) use the image textures in Almaz_Textures.zip. These are for two materials: one for the main station hull, one for everything else. Images for diffuse, emission, metalness, normal and roughness are included. The windows have been included as separate objects, so you can either apply your own glass material or use the black/glossy default. If you use the default, you won't be able to see the 'lightbox' interiors that use the emission material to create an illusion of the inside of the station. Separate diffuse and roughness textures have been provided for each of the three flown stations (Salyut-2, 3 and 5). I've also included decal sheets for the markings on each of the three stations, in case you want to create your own materials.
