The Kugelhandgranate Model 1913 was an early fragmentation grenade developed and manufactured in Germany in the years leading up to World War I. Its name, meaning “ball hand grenade,” comes from its distinctive spherical cast-iron body, which was designed to fragment upon detonation and disperse shrapnel in all directions. The grenade used a friction igniter system activated by pulling a cord, initiating a short time delay before explosion.
